For years, the U.S. reading crisis has been treated as an early grades problem. This narrow focus misses the bigger challenge many students face in middle school: the "comprehension wall."

Students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. They can often decode words but meaning breaks down with complex sentences, sophisticated vocabulary, or unfamiliar subject matter. The consequences extend beyond English language arts to science, social studies, and math. Student confidence can erode.

Classroom diversity intensifies the challenge. Some students struggle to decode. Others can read words but lack vocabulary or background knowledge. Some read far above grade level. The problem, Toll states, is not a lack of educator commitment but a lack of scalable support.

AI's Potential and Pitfalls in Reading Support

Toll is generally skeptical of AI hype in education, especially suggestions it can replace teachers or curriculum. However, she identifies middle school reading as an area where carefully designed AI tools could help if they strengthen instruction rather than shortcut it.

The opportunity lies in custom-built literacy tools based on the science of reading. These tools would use AI to diagnose student needs precisely, provide timely feedback, and help teachers differentiate support. The Brookings Institution has found AI can either enrich or diminish learning, recommending schools use tools that "teach, not tell."

Schools could use AI to support known student needs: a higher volume of reading, more precise diagnosis, timely feedback, opportunities to revise thinking, and ways to access difficult grade-level texts. One major challenge is assessment. Reading comprehension is not a simple sequence of discrete skills. A student may master a standard in one unit but struggle with it in the next due to text complexity.

Well-designed AI tools could analyze students' everyday work, identify patterns, and give teachers clearer visibility into where comprehension breaks down. This moves beyond stand-alone assessments.

How AI Tools Could Function in Classrooms

AI could assist with real-time differentiation. For example, students reading a complex article could work in pairs. If they struggle, AI could ask a just-right follow-up question. It could redirect them to a specific sentence to reread. It could provide a vocabulary definition or brief background knowledge. Students would have a chance to revise after feedback that pushes them back into the text.

One teacher often cannot provide this individual support to 26 students with different needs simultaneously. The impact could be greatest on struggling readers, who are too often given watered-down materials instead of access points to rigorous content. Over time, the achievement gap becomes both a reading gap and a knowledge gap.

Early results are promising. In one large urban district in Texas and another diverse district in Tennessee, middle schools using an AI-supported literacy model saw significantly stronger year-over-year growth on state reading assessments than comparable schools not using the model.

These examples suggest AI-supported intervention can help provide more responsive support at scale. However, Toll warns that if AI becomes a shortcut, a novelty, or a substitute for high-quality instruction, it will fail students. If used mainly to complete assignments faster, it weakens essential habits: reading closely, asking questions, explaining thinking, and revising ideas.

Key Questions for Adopting AI Reading Tools

The best way to improve reading achievement is still to read a lot. Tools should support a higher volume of reading with increasingly complex texts. Schools have recently replaced incoherent materials with vetted curricula that build knowledge and expose students to grade-level texts.

Before adopting AI-supported tools, Toll urges educators and district leaders to ask hard questions.

These questions matter because the goal is not to make reading easier by removing cognitive work. The goal is to make rigorous reading more accessible so more students can participate. We cannot treat middle school reading challenges as an inevitable byproduct of earlier gaps. Nor can we assume adolescents without strong literacy foundations are beyond meaningful intervention. For students told reading is something they should have already mastered, that support could make all the difference.
